APAMALL Journal Style Sheet

Aims and Scope

The APAMALL Journal, the journal of the Asia-Pacific Association for Multimedia-Assisted Language Learning (APAMALL), seeks to fulfill the stated aims of APAMALL as a whole, which are to advance foreign language education by: 

1. promoting language learning throughout Asian-Pacific countries and the world
2. providing a worldwide focus on innovative research, development and practice in
education and training in the areas of CALL and TELL 
3. enhancing opportunities for scholars from Asian countries to exchange ideas and 
materials for promoting ways in which we teach foreign languages via technology

Subjects for submissions include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

1. theoretical debate on the effectiveness of CALL instruction
2. integration of CALL instruction into the foreign language curriculum
3. language learning styles and their influence on courseware design
4. evaluative studies of courseware use in the teaching and learning process
5. assessment of the potential of technological advances in the delivery of language
learning materials
6. exploitation of on-line language learning
7. software design and development
8. net-worked foreign language learning


1. All papers submitted to APAMALL should be original, neither having been previously published nor being considered elsewhere at the time of submission.

2. The language of the APAMALL Journal will be English only. 

3. Authors should be aware that the manuscript may be modified by the editorial staff to improve the readability of an article. 

4. All submissions will be reviewed by three referees. 

5. APAMALL Journal is to be published annually.

6. Authors should be members of APAMALL if they wish to publish their paper with the APAMALL journal. The Membership application can be downloaded from http://apamall.org. Those who are not members should send membership dues of at least US$50 with their completed application form.

Manuscript requirements

1. Papers should not exceed 10,000 words and should be preceded by an abstract of less than 500 words. The title, the name(s) and full mailing address(es) of the author(s), including e-mail addresses, should appear on the first page of the manuscript.

2. Three printed hard copies are to be sent to Dr. Ohlander by air mail, together with all relevant files sent by e-mail. Graphics and screen dumps must be of sufficiently good quality to be reproduced in a reduced format. Please indicate which graphics package is being used to produce them. Text should be written only in an MS DOC format.

3. Text should be left-aligned only, double spaced throughout, with wide margins on A4 paper, using one side of the page only. Sheets should be numbered consecutively. Font size should be 12 (Times New Roman Character Set). 

4. It is the responsibility of authors to provide, if necessary, written permission for the reproduction of any graphic or screen-shots included with the paper.


Spelling: American English spelling should be consistently used throughout the paper.

Footnotes should he kept to a minimum. Any acknowledgements, or explanation of the genesis of an article, should appear as the first note keyed to the article title by an asterisk (*). Note indicators in the text should follow punctuation marks.

Subheadings should be typed with prefatory numbers indicating the level of importance, 1, 1.1, I.I.I. No more than three levels of subheading should normally be used.

Abbreviations. Do not use full stops in abbreviations: ICI, OBE, not I.C.I., O.B.E. When referring to the title of an organization by its initials, first spell out the title in full followed by the abbreviation in parentheses, thus: Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI). Thereafter refer to it as ICI.

Underlining. Do not underline. Use italics or boldface for emphasis.

References should be given in parentheses in standard author-date form in the body of the text: (Davies 1995: 65). When a second or subsequent work by a particular author in the same year is cited, references should be distinguished by letters (a, b, c, etc.) and placed after the date.

When a work is written by three or more authors, all names should be given in the first citation: (Eck, Legenhausen & Wolff 1995). In subsequent citations, the first name only should be given with et al. added. A complete list of references cited should be typed double-spaced at the end of the article, using the following conventions:

If you wish to refer to a URL, either within your text or as a reference, do not include 'URL' or any additional punctuation, e.g. <http://apamall.org/intro>

Editorial details not described herein should conform with APA Style Sheet (5th Edition).


Referees will judge each paper based on the following four-letter grade scale: 

A: accepted with no revision, 
B: accepted with partial revision
C: accepted with major revision
D: flat rejection

Thus, papers will be accepted with or without major or partial revisions, so long as they receive better than a ˇ§Bˇ¨ grade on the average, i.e., when they are deemed worth keeping even when there is a need for major revision. The editor will be given the right to decide on the appropriateness and quality of those papers whose overall grade falls on the borderline.


As for papers that are accepted on condition that they undergo major or partial revisions, these should be made by the authors or contributors by complying with the three refereesˇ¦ suggestions and comments to a reasonable extent. Those papers that fail to comply will be held up until satisfactory revisions are fully made.


A final galley will be sent to contributors by e-mail for proofreading, provided that they can guarantee return of the corrected proofs, by e-mail when appropriate, within seven days of receipt. Contributors should correct printers' errors, but not introduce new or different material at this stage.

Publication Fees and Offprints

Contributors will be able to download all online issues free of charge.  
Contributors who wish to subscribe to offprints should send a bank-drafted check (US$100) to Dr. Stephen Ohlander by airmail, or wire this amount to:
